USFWS OREGON SILVERSPOT BUTTERFLY ​HABITAT RESTORATION Safe Harbor agreement
Watershed restoration, Enhancement, & Assessment

The Oregon silverspot butterfly population is rapidly declining, and can only be found in very few populations, mostly due to loss of habitat. Two small populations occur just south of Yachats, Oregon, within a seven-mile-long corridor along either side of Highway 101 – Bray Point/Agate Meadows and Rock Creek/Big Creek. The recovery goal of this project is to increase the availability of the butterfly’s habitat and boost the two small butterfly populations, ultimately reconnecting and stabilizing these populations.​

Project Description: Conducting FREE weed treatment for three fast-spreading noxious weeds along the Alsea River: Policeman's Helmet, Yellow Flag Iris, and Knotweeds. Treatment will use a combination of manual control and fish and mammal safe herbicides. Cutting, mowing, or pulling these weeds causes faster and more vigorous growth - DO NOT DISTURB THEM!

Siletz National Water Quality Inventory
WATER QUALITY MONITORING​

Project Timeline: September 2021 - March 2024

Partnerships & Collaborations: National Resource Conservation Service

Project Description: To develop a source water protection area (SWPA) assessment addressing agricultural and forestry related impacts to water consumed by the Oregon cities of Newport, Toledo, Seal Rock and Siletz as their municipal drinking water supply. The plan will include an overview of the SWPA and at-risk public water systems and recommendations to inform implementation of conservation practices and an outreach strategy to target producers and identify critical areas.

Project Description: Agricultural land use practices are one source of nonpoint source pollution affecting beneficial uses and potentially contributing to Clean Water Act section 303(d) impairments in the Yachats watershed of Oregon's MidCoast Basin. This project will include a site scale assessment of near-stream landscape conditions and agricultural practices to identify opportunities for development of on-the-ground nonpoint source reduction and focus outreach to private landowners to identify locations that are suitable for best management practices (BMPs).
